Project List 2019

Operation Gratitude: A Special Ongoing Project

Run by our Junior Auxiliary member Emma Elrod. She is collecting goods and funds to ship packages to deployed troops. Contact us for more information or drop by the Legion Hall during a meeting. Our troops need all the support we can give them.

JANUARY

  •  American Legion's Oratorical Contest. College Scholarship Award contest is based on the Constitution and is open to male and female high school students below the age of 20.  https://www.legion.org/oratorical/about

FEBRUARY

  • Auxiliary's Americanism Essay Contest. This contest is  held once a year and is open  to  students in Goochland schools and home schooled students involved with a Goochland home school group. Participants are in grades 3 - 12. The theme changes yearly and panel of judges pick winners based on how well their essay answers the question and solutions proposed. There are awards associated with the winning essay. The winning works are then sent on to other levels for judging.  https://www.alaforveterans.org/programs/

  • Quilts of Valor: We sew two quilt tops yearly for donation to this group. The goal is to provide every veteran with a quilt. Few sewing skills are needed so come out and enjoy the fellowship of making these quilt tops. https://www.qovf.org/

MARCH

  • Girls' State Interviews: This is a very prestigious selection process for rising senior girls in Goochland schools. See the Girls State link below to learn more about this opportunity. A committee of ALA members interviews each applicant and chooses the winners to attend Girls State. https://www.vagirlsstate.org/

  • Yard & Bake Sale: One of our best fund raisers. (Funds from this event help to send girls to Girls State each year.) We need ALA members to collect goods for the yard sale and also bring in food for the Bake Sale. Volunteers are needed the day before to help set up and price items and are needed during the sale to monitor the goods, help customers, ring up sales and sell the baked goods.
